Drawing up an itinerary

Kaliningrad can be reached easily by air, rail or road from many cities in Russia and Europe. Once you have planned your journey to Kaliningrad, it is time to take care of the essentials. To move into the hall of residence or start attending fitness classes, you should have ready measles and diphtheria vaccination certificates, a chest X-ray film, and medical test results from your local clinic. We recommend that you have a check-up before departure and take a sufficient supply of your routine medications. Make sure the date of your arrival is covered by your visa. Having booked your journey, contact your coordinator at the University to tell them your travel details. Don’t forget to check customs regulations and your carrier’s baggage policy. Print out your visa invitation, proof of enrolment letter, University contacts, and itinerary. Make and keep handy a copy of your passport. Get a map and direction to your accommodation. Contact your coordinator if you need any help with arranging your journey. Keep safe and useful the emergency number of the embassy or consulate of your country in Russia. It’s a good idea to check an online weather forecast before you travel to find out what to expect on arrival. Although the weather in Kaliningrad is quite unpredictable, the temperatures average between +18 and +22 °С in summer and between -7-0 °С in winter. An umbrella might be useful. If you do not speak Russian, install an offline translation app to help you through your first weeks in Kaliningrad.

Border crossing tips

All travelers must go through border control when entering the Russian Federation. All non-Russian and non-Belarusian citizens are issued a migration card when crossing the border. The card is proof of your legal stay in the country and has to be filled in very carefully. Choose ‘Education’ as the ‘Purpose of travel’ and enter the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (14 Nevskogo St, Kaliningrad) in the field ‘Name of host person or company, locality’

Upon arrival

When you have arrived in Kaliningrad and moved into your accommodation,

1) contact or visit your coordinator;

2) visit our Migration Centre (room 100 at 14 Nevskogo St, the building on your right) on the first working day after arrival to register with the Migration Service;

3) sign your agreement with the University;

4) ask your coordinator what else needs to be done before you start your study or work at the University.
